Like many women, I haven’t always looked after my fertility. I started the pill in my teens without giving it a second thought, and only came off it 15 years later when my husband and I were ready to start a family. All that time, I went without a period, oblivious to what my hormones were doing, and how it might affect my fertility longer term.
Fast forward to my early thirties, I was enjoying a successful career in London; working hard, playing hard, travelling, doing all the things you do before kids. My husband and I decided, “it was time”, we wanted to start a family. So I came off the pill thinking we’d fall pregnant easily. Not in our case.
A year down the line my periods were still erratic, and I finally managed to convince my GP something wasn’t right. Blood tests confirmed I had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a common imbalance of sex hormones; and I was referred to a London fertility Clinic.
It was on our wait for fertility investigations, that I became pregnant naturally. We were overjoyed and shared the good news with friends when we were past the 12-week mark. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, we lost our little girl 17-weeks into the pregnancy. Heartbroken, depressed and more desperate than ever to have a child, I started looking into natural fertility methods that would help my PCOS.
During my research, I came across the amazing Clare Blake in London, offering fertility massage. It sounded too good to be true – a relaxing massage while helping my fertility issues… Yes please! I had no idea what to expect, but gave it a go.
My session with Clare was relaxing and I felt more at ease than I had in months, but the biggest thing I took away from my appointment was the need to reconnect with my body. I realized I had spent so much time being mad or disappointed with my body, that I had become completely disconnected from it. The ligaments around my uterus had become tight over time, my lower back was a maze of knots and my tummy and lower abdomen were cold to touch because of the lack of circulation to these areas.
When I left my appointment, I continued to massage my tummy at home as Clare taught me, ate (most of) the right stuff, and most importantly stopped being mad at my body and listened to it, worked with it, not against it. Sure enough my periods became regular again, my periods were less painful and lighter, and I felt optimistic again.
Four months after seeing Clare, I was pregnant with my gorgeous boy, Dara.
When my son turned 18 months, I made the bold decision to re-train and specialize in women’s health massage. Most of all, I wanted to empower women with knowledge of their cycles, bodies and (sometimes crazy) hormones; to talk about fertility openly; and to give women an alternative to HRT, fertility treatment, or putting up with painful periods. And that is how Well Woman began…
